Today: “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.”

Passage: Mark 10

48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”  49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. 51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”  52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. (Mk 10: 48-52, NIV 84-EMPHASIS ADDED)

Blind Bartimaeus (that’s how people called him) came to know that Jesus was passing by. Friends might have called him BB!

He was very excited. This is the moment he has been waiting for. So he screamed: ”Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me”

Those few words contain almost all the essential ingredients of true prayer

The crowd that was around Jesus tried to stop him, but he didn’t care.

Those who wanted to stop him were spiritually blind!

As Jesus wanted to see BB, the same crowd says:

“Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.”

First, he needed to cheer up in his mind; then, stand up and then run

He did not postpone that for “tomorrow”. He knew, Today is the day

He wanted to meet Jesus, when Jesus came so close

See the three steps to his healing:-knowing, believing, confessing

  1. He knew that Jesus was the messiah/Lord they were waiting for. So he called Jesus, “son of David”. Knowing Jesus as He is-the first step
  2. He had the faith to call Jesus loudly, and run to him, throwing his cloak aside. He knew he wouldn’t need that cloak anymore
  3. He told Jesus his problem. He did not cover up. He confessed his blindness and the need for a cure

Do you know, what happens to us most of the time?

We will call Jesus “silently” because if we don’t get the answer, others will look down upon us! We will not leave the cloak because we may need it again (peter picked up his old boat and net even after Jesus was resurrected!)

Finally, instead of admitting our situation or (spiritual) blindness, we will say/act as if “everything is perfectly all right”

If that is what we are doing, we cannot get the solution/healing from Jesus

If we confess our situation and run to Jesus with faith, He will heal us and change things for good

Have a blessed week

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank for your grace and mercy upon me. I trust in you with my life. I admit my spiritual blindness and the fact that I cannot do without you, Lord. Thank you for helping me. Amen
